EBOG 1s vs Winchmore 1s

SAL Senior Div 1

8 February 2020

EBOG

I wasn’t there for this one. Ended up in Edinburgh on a stag do and battling Storm Ciara up north.

I was paying no attention to anything between 2pm and 3.45 and was dismayed not to have heard anything from anyone until Bob Gyles text me the final score which perked me right up.

I’ve pieced together the below from scraps of conversations.

We went 2-0 down. 2-0 down away from home against a team who were going to be fighting for every point they could possibly get and who, like us, understood the importance of 3 points in these games.

It was looking bleak. Needing 3 goals to overturn the tie against a team who know how to play their pitch wasn’t going to be easy. We needed a moment to turn the game.

Step up Thomas Edward King (we have officially stopped calling him Tommy now so stop mentioning it).

It’s been told he cut in front the right, beat a couple of players on his way into the box, opened his body up and slotted the ball home just before the break. Frankly, I don’t care if he’d have tripped over himself on the line and bundled the ball in. The way it changed the face of the game has been documented by many a player.

Half time. 2-1. Back in it and with some momentum.

Next goal was crucial.

And it was ours.

Barney Jones (nee Johnson) won the penalty and cooly converted it. Something you may have seen on twitter as he mentioned it a couple of times that weekend. Follow him; @barneyjonesactor

And then the winner.

88 minutes played.

From an EBOG corner we won the ball and Lewis played a 60 yard ball to Barrel’s feet. Barrel did what Barrel does and held the ball long enough to get Lewis tearing up the pitch. Completing a cumulative 100 yard 1-2 Lewis was in front of goal and struck the killer blow. 3-2- Winchmore with little more than a minute plus stoppage to play.

The game finished with us taking 3 points back to N21. Great result, great character. I was nearly 400 miles away raising a glass to the boys.

More of the same next week when we welcome Old Parks to The Paulin. Huge game. Again.

TK went from sublime to ridiculous throughout the 90. Bagging MOM for a superb display but also scooping an outside the boot pass vertical to be awarded DOD for the same fixture.
