Winchmore 1s vs Aloysians 1s

Middlesex and Essex Senior Cup

25 January

Seventh Heaven

Winchmore Hill came away deserved winners in the Quarter Final of the Middlesex and Essex Cup running out 7-0 winners in the end.

Results have been a bit of a mixed bag recently with good wins followed by bad luck followed by poor performances followed by bouncing back.

A game against Aloysians could have proved tricky, a side we know little about in a league we know little about.

It was important we started well and it was clear from the first whistle that we were up for the game.

Straight away we put them on the back foot and put them under pressure. A series of corners and dangerous set pieces lead to our first goal. A short played to Lewis on the left hand side and he ghosted into the box. His cross/shot was deflected into the net to give us the lead. Originally chalked up as an own goal was overturned after protestation and chalked up for Mr Swarbrick.

Tom King doubled our lead before half time, but I’m writing this nearly over 2 weeks after the actual fixture so can’t remember how it went in. But well done Tommy K.

2-0 at half time. Playing well but we knew the dangers. Taking our foot off the gas, allowing them a sniff or simply giving them any encouragement and the game could turn on it’s head. Next goal was crucial.

And the next goal was ours. Jamie Doyle playing from the right hand side cut in and struck the ball towards the far post. It took another unlucky deflection and nestled into the goal for a 3-0 lead and a real OG.

The next 4 goals were shared between Barney and Leroy. I’m not sure which order they came in. Given that I do remember Barney falling over a lot in his first 5 minutes on the pitch I feel like Leroy struck first. Possibly slotting home at the far post.

I’m delighted for both Barney and Leroy though, they’re players who deserve to be scoring at this level and to both net a brace will have been a quiet relief for both them and the team.

A 7-0 game that was reflective of the way we played and the confidence we took into the game. The games aren’t always that easy though, we need to be mindful of this and continue to grind out the tough results as we turn our attentions back to the league as we welcome Old Owens next week.

Leroy, after a couple of weeks getting minutes with the reserves, came back in fine form and got MOM.

Kieran well off the MOM vote this week but a run away winner of DOD after smashing a lad on the half way line and protesting ‘But I DIDN’t get the ball’ to the ref. Yes Kieran. That’s how a foul works.
