7s vs St James Old Boys (h), 1-1, 14.09.19

Winchmore Hill 7’s vs St. James old boys reserves. 1-1

The score may not sound impressive but the performance from ourselves was, before the game spoke to the players with regards with things being said last season, and basically putting it to them that ‘talk is cheap’ and our actions are what counts. And they sure didn’t let themselves down.

With a new system before and during the game In place, making sure players understood what their jobs were and how to play their roles for the benefit of the team you may think there could be some resistance, but honestly everyone listened and the benefits were there to see.

We started the game with a swagger that you wouldn’t expect from us if you saw us last season playing 2/3 touch football round St. James through out the first half, making the easy choices but always the right choices, and playing with a smile on our face’s. Then it happened what we knew would due to all the pressure we were applying in the first half Jack Gaughan scoring our’s and his first goal of the season.

It wasn’t the prettiest but the fact that we worked for that and we knew it, was pleasing for everyone and confidence grew in everything we did.

Then the 2nd half began, now I’m not someone who likes to leave the fate of a football game in the refs hands, but two clear handballs in the box and the answers we got from him were like listening to Wenger on match of the day. “ I didn’t see it” even though he was 20 yards away. But we didn’t hold back.

Then they were awarded a free kick can’t remember if the ball had gone out of play before hand but it wasn’t the greatest just a floater over the top missed by everyone bouncing in front of our keeper and Into the back of net, comical at best.

Then with 5 minutes left in the game we thought we won it with a great run by Andre Vine but their keeper was on top form for them during the game and made another great save to deny us the 3 points.

There wasn’t an individual who stood out for us in the game but the whole team looked in a good position and playing for each other. If we build from this and remain in the same positive mindset things are looking much better for us. I was proud to see the boys actually play to their ability and with a smile
